Who runs it

Baby Name Finder is operated by Mitchell Duncan as a sole-trader project based in Canada, Ontario. It is an independent publication, not affiliated with any naming consultancy, religious organisation, government body or commercial baby-name brand.

Editorial work is done by the Baby Name Finder editorial team — a small group that handles sourcing, classification, native-script review and corrections. We intentionally publish under a team byline rather than a single named editor: the project is collaborative, and we want corrections to be evaluated on the citation in front of us, not who delivered them.

For business or partnership questions, write to the operator through the contact form.

How the names are sourced

Every name in the database is drawn from publicly available, authoritative sources — national naming registries, peer-reviewed onomastic references, and recognised cultural and historical name dictionaries. We do not scrape commercial baby-name forums or invent names.

The full per-language source list with last-checked dates is published openly on the Data sources page. Our end-to-end process — from registry pull to native-script verification — is documented on the Methodology page.

Each name is tagged by gender, style (modern or traditional), length, and popularity tier (top 100, trending 101–300, or under-the-radar). The exact rules used to assign each tag are listed in the classification section of the Methodology page.

Editorial principles

Accuracy first

Every claim — meaning, etymology, popularity rank — is checked against at least one of the sources listed on our Data sources page before publication.

Cultural respect

Names from every language are presented as first-class. Native script is shown alongside romanised forms; we do not anglicise names whose authoritative form lives in another script.

Transparency

We tell you where every figure comes from and what we don't know. Our full editorial guidelines and methodology are public.

Editorial independence

Advertising never influences which names we include, how we rank them, or what we say about them. We do not run paid placements or sponsored names.

Privacy first

No accounts, no profiles, no name lookups tied to you. Saved shortlists live only in your browser's localStorage.

What this site is not

  • Not a naming consultancy. We do not offer paid one-on-one naming advice.
  • Not a religious or political authority. Where a name has religious significance, we describe it. We do not endorse or recommend names on religious grounds.
  • Not an exhaustive registry. 5,000+ names is a curated sample. Languages with rich historical traditions (Arabic, Hindi, Chinese) carry far larger inventories than we cover. We prioritise names currently in use, with a long tail for cultural depth. The full caveats are on the Methodology page.
  • Not legal advice on naming. Registering a baby's name is governed by your local civil registry. Check there before formal use.

Corrections and feedback

If you spot an error — a wrong meaning, an incorrect ranking, a missing name, or a corrupted native-script form — we want to know. Our corrections policy describes the timeline. The shortest path is a message through the contact form with the page URL and a citation to the better source.

We particularly welcome native-speaker corrections for languages where our central registry coverage is weakest (Arabic, Hindi).

How we pay for it

The site is funded entirely by display advertising via Google AdSense. We are not affiliated with the SSA, ONS, INSEE or any of the registries we cite. We do not accept paid placements, sponsored name pages, affiliate names, or anything similar. Our full advertising disclosure is on the editorial guidelines page.
