Marta is the Iberian, Italian and Central European form of Martha, from the Aramaic מַרְתָּא (Marta) — 'lady' or 'mistress of the house.' In the New Testament, Martha of Bethany (Luke 10:38–42) is the sister of Mary and Lazarus; she is associated with practical hospitality rather than contemplative faith, and has become the patron of cooks, servants and homemakers.
