Beatrice is the Italian and English form of the Latin Beatrix, from beatus ('blessed, happy') — the feminine of the same root that gives beat and beatitude. The name was used as early as the 4th century. Dante Alighieri's Beatrice (his idealised love and guide through Paradise in the Divine Comedy) gave the name its deepest literary associations; she is identified with Beatrice Portinari (1266–1290).
