Ezra comes from the Hebrew עֶזְרָא (Ezra), meaning 'help' or 'God helps' (a shortened form of Azaryahu). In the Hebrew Bible, Ezra is a priest and scribe who led the second wave of Jews returning from Babylonian exile. The name was used minimally in English until a sharp rise from 2005 onward.
